Grocery stores on Maui — where to shop for a villa week.

Nearly everything on Maui’s shelves arrives by ship or plane, so prices are higher than most mainland visitors expect, and popular items can run short before a holiday. The cheapest and widest choice is in Kahului, five to ten minutes from the airport. Wailea is about half an hour south and Kāʻanapali roughly forty-five minutes to an hour west, depending on traffic, so one well-planned stop on the way from the airport saves several trips later.

Bring a cooler bag if you are buying cold food, and keep in mind that your rental may have only a basic pantry: oil, salt, coffee filters and foil are often missing.

Kahului is Maui’s shopping hub. Costco is close to the airport and is the place for cases of water, coffee, snacks, beach supplies and bulk breakfast food; you need a membership. Walmart and Target are also in Kahului, and Whole Foods Market and several full supermarkets, including Safeway and Foodland, are in and around the town’s shopping centers.

If your flight lands in the afternoon, the Kahului stores are busy at the end of the workday. Many visitors do a quick first shop for the first night and breakfast, then return for the big shop on a quieter morning, or let someone else do it.

Kīhei has full supermarkets, including Safeway, Foodland and Times, plus smaller markets, so South Maui guests rarely need to drive back to Kahului after the first day. Wailea and Mākena have resort shops and convenience stores but no full-size supermarket, so most Wailea rentals shop in Kīhei.

West Maui has fewer full supermarkets than South Maui. Lahaina is still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire, so check which stores are open before you count on one. Kāʻanapali, Honokōwai, Nāpili and Kapalua have smaller markets and convenience stores, which are handy for top-ups but cost more and carry less.

Pāʻia has a well-known natural foods store and small markets, and Upcountry towns such as Pukalani, Makawao and Kula have local supermarkets and general stores. Upcountry is cooler and greener, with farm stands along the roads, but the shops are smaller and close earlier than in Kahului.

If you are going to Hāna, buy what you need before you leave; stores along the road are few and small.

Maui’s farmers markets are the best place for local fruit, greens, avocados and flowers, and some sell fish, bread and prepared food. Grocery delivery on Maui exists through app-based shoppers and some stores, and several rental managers and concierge services will stock the fridge before you arrive. Coverage and delivery windows vary by area and are thinner in West Maui, Upcountry and Hāna, so check your address before relying on it, and expect delivery fees and tips on top of Maui prices.

Delivery solves the trip to the store but not the cooking, the menu or the cleanup. For a group on holiday, that is often the bigger job.

Many Maui stays are condos with compact kitchens, small fridges and a long walk from the parking lot. Plan meals around the space you have: one big cook-out night, simple breakfasts and lunches, and no more fresh fish than you can eat in a day. With a personal chef Maui, the shopping is part of the job. The chef plans the menu with you, buys for it, cooks in your kitchen, serves and leaves the kitchen clean, and fish is named as the species we actually bought. On Signature dinners the groceries are included in the per-guest price; on Stay Chef days they are billed at cost with receipts, as our groceries at cost note explains.

For bigger gatherings, such as a reunion night or a wedding-week party of roughly 10 to 75, Maui catering brings a staffed team, with servers at $80 an hour and a sous-chef at $105 an hour on four- to five-hour minimums as their own lines. Tables, linens and tents are not included unless you ask for them.

Signature dinners on Maui are published at $225–$375 a guest with groceries included, for a minimum party of six. Stay Chef days for a chef and an assistant start from $1,550 a day for one meal, with groceries billed at cost, and multi-day vacation chef stays start from $350 a person a day. Wailea, Kapalua, Kāʻanapali and Mākena are base zones; Upcountry adds a surcharge from $75.
