New Year’s Eve in Maui — fireworks rules, sunset timing and dinner at the villa.

New Year’s Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, and on Maui it is one of the busiest nights of the year. Resort galas sell out, restaurants run set menus and the neighbourhoods light up at midnight. If your group has a villa or condo for the holidays, this guide covers the rules, the timing and how to have a proper New Year’s Eve dinner at the house.

What New Year’s Eve on Maui is like

There are three common ways to spend it. Resorts in Wailea and West Maui hold dinners and parties with music. Many restaurants serve a fixed New Year’s Eve menu at set seating times. Evening cruises leave the harbour for a few hours on the water. All three book out well before December, and all three end with a drive or a shuttle back to where you are staying, on roads that are busy that night.

The fourth option, and the one families with a villa often choose, is to keep the night at the house: a long dinner, the children awake for midnight or asleep down the hall, and fireworks from the lānai.

Fireworks on Maui: the rules and the hours

Under Hawaiʻi law and Maui County rules, fireworks may be set off on New Year’s Eve only between 9 p.m. on 31 December and 1 a.m. on 1 January. For the 2025–26 season, the Maui Fire Department said consumer fireworks such as sparklers and fountains did not need a permit during those hours, firecrackers needed a $25 permit sold at listed stores, and aerial fireworks were illegal without a permit. Fireworks are not allowed on public roads, in county parks or within 500 feet of a hotel without a permit.

The department publishes the new season’s details each December, including any public display, so check the 2026 notice before you plan. Leeward Maui can be very dry, and many rental agreements ban fireworks outright. If you want a midnight moment at the villa without the risk, a champagne toast and dessert on the lānai works just as well.

Resort party, restaurant or a villa night

A resort party suits couples who want to dress up and dance and do not mind the price or the crowd. A restaurant set menu works for a small group that books early. A villa dinner suits families, friends sharing a house and anyone who wants the evening to run on their own clock.

A personal chef Maui booking turns the villa into the venue. The chef plans the menu with you, shops, cooks in your kitchen, serves the courses and leaves the kitchen clean before midnight, so the evening is yours.

Timing the evening: sunset to midnight

At the end of December the sun sets around six on Maui. Many villa groups start with drinks on the lānai at sunset, sit down for dinner around seven, and keep dessert and a toast for later. Families with young children often serve the children first and let them sleep before the late part of the night.

If you want a late dessert course, a midnight snack or a staffed bar running until after midnight, say so when you ask, because it changes the staffing and the quote. Check your rental’s quiet hours too; many condo buildings enforce them even on New Year’s Eve.

A New Year’s Eve menu at the villa

A Maui New Year’s Eve menu often starts light and builds: local fish crudo or poke, a warm course, a main of fish or meat cooked on the villa grill, and a dessert that can wait until the toast. Fish is named as what is caught and available on the day rather than promised weeks ahead; our fish species notes explain why.

Tell us about allergies, vegetarian guests and children’s plates early. And if you want the morning after to be easy, our day-after brunch notes cover a late breakfast at the house on New Year’s Day.

Wailea, Kīhei or West Maui: logistics by area

Wailea, Mākena, Kīhei, Kāʻanapali, Nāpili and Kapalua are base zones for us. Upcountry houses in Kula or Makawao add a published travel line from $75, and Pāʻia and the North Shore are quoted with the menu. On New Year’s Eve the team arrives early and leaves the roads before the busiest hours.

If you are deciding whether to eat out on one of the other nights of the holiday week, our Wailea restaurants guide and Kāʻanapali restaurants guide cover the two main resort areas.

Group size: a chef dinner or a staffed party

For a table of six to about a dozen, one chef cooking and serving is usually right. A party for twenty or more, a buffet across two houses or a wedding-week celebration is a staffed event, and Maui catering covers that, with servers at $80 an hour and a sous-chef at $105 an hour on four- to five-hour minimums, shown as their own lines.

On New Year’s Eve a bartender takes a job off the host. The Maui mobile bar is published from $1,200 for four hours plus $85 a guest, with spirits billed at cost or brought by you.
