The villa versus the reservation, honestly compared.
Sometimes the restaurant wins — this page says when. For groups, weeks, and anyone with a good villa kitchen, the private chef usually wins on the whole bill, not just the food.
Where the restaurant wins
Two people, one night, no kitchen: go to the restaurant. Maui has extraordinary ones, and a date-night premium makes no sense against a $250 dinner out. We would rather lose that booking than sell it badly.
Where the villa wins
Groups of six or more, weeks, and celebrations. A party of eight at a Wailea restaurant — entrees, a bottle, tip, the drive, the babysitter’s extra hours — routinely totals what a $150–$250-a-guest private dinner costs, minus the privacy, the pace, and the clean kitchen after.
The hidden restaurant costs
- Resort-corridor pricing at South Maui’s ADR-driven rates
- Split tables for groups of ten-plus — you are never all at one table
- The 6pm or 8:45pm reservation compromise
- Driving, parking, and the end-of-night logistics nobody enjoys
The honest math
Eight guests, three dinners out versus one private dinner plus a Stay Chef day: the private pattern usually lands within a rounding error on cost and miles ahead on the week’s best memories. Run your version in the estimator.
Questions, answered
For groups of six-plus across multiple meals, frequently yes — especially against resort-corridor restaurants. For couples’ single nights out, no, and we say so.
Book them — a Maui trip should include the island’s great dining rooms. The private chef covers the other six nights, not the pilgrimage.
